Hi, Jessica,
My name is Saul and I'm from the U.S., as well, and I will be attending Atlantic College in the fall.
If you have any questions regarding the application process in the U.S., feel free to ask. Unfortunately, I can't answer many specific questions about the colleges since I haven't even attended my own, yet.
Best of luck!

Best of luck! Hey, Thanks man. ^^ Do standardized test play a big factor in choosing the best applicant?

Standardized tests, grades, recommendation letters, and your writing are the main things that the selection committee will look at for the first round of the process. They'll be looking for academic competence in general, plus a bit of spirit from the writing portion, to decide who gets offered an interview. Once at the interview stage, it's pretty much all about the interviewers trying to get to know you.

QUOTE (doeshaveaname @ Jul 5 2009, 11:40 PM) Oh, I'm definitely applying. What exactly was your interview process like? Thank you. I know this wasn't a response to anything I said, but I'll respond, anyway. :] I'm from Western Michigan, and I had to travel to Detroit, which is in Eastern Michigan. I know that the National Committee expects people to travel for the interview. The furthest anyone traveled to get to Detroit, that I know of, was Buffalo, NY. I'm sure the travel distances increase and decrease depending on which portion of the U.S. you're in. My interview was in a hotel. There was a panel of three alumni. (Two attended UWC-USA and the other attended Atlantic College.) They booked two suites that had offices attached, and that's where the interview was. Initially, they asked my Mum and me if we had any questions. Then, two of them took me to the other room, where we talked about my essays and various other topics. (The other person stayed behind to ask my Mum questions.) We covered everything from the meaning of my e-mail address to gay rights (that's what I wrote my personal essay on) to international politics. On the application, we had to rank our school choices, and they gave us the opportunity to re-think those choices at the interview. About halfway through, the person who had stayed behind came back. The interview lasted approximately one hour. I know that some places (usually in highly populated areas) have activity days instead of just a plain interview. As Irfan (one of my interviewers said), "The activity days are only different in that we tire you out before interviewing you." From what I've heard, you do a bunch of team-building exercises, presumably to see who has leadership potential. I think they would also want to see that someone is willing to let others take control once in a while, and not take all the "glory" as their own. I went in feeling absolutely terrified and incredibly anxious, but I walked out feeling calm and confident. They really did try to make me feel as comfortable as possible. They made jokes, and I made jokes. I even talked about this forum a little bit. (By the way, this forum has been incredibly help throughout this whole process. I dunno what I would have done without it.) They really wanted to know me, and not some idealized person people so often try to make themselves out as in interviews. Officially, it's called an interview, but they told me to consider it a conversation. That really helped ease my anxiety. I hope this helps! Saul

Saul I'd much rather have an interview like that. ^^ Detroit isn't far from where I live. So, they basically want to get to know me and who i am, what i do type of things? This forum is very helpful and so are all the people. Thank you so much.

Hello, Jessica! My name is Hristina and I'm going to Lester B. Pearson UWC of the Pacific (Canada) in the fall! I am from Serbia and I also thought I'll never get there... Pearson was my first wish and Adriatic was the second (only two scholarships offered in my country) and (unbelievably) I was chosen for my first wish! I know I'm not from the same background like you, but if there is a way I can help you (now or during the coming year), feel free to ask Wish you good luck and hope you'll enter UWC!!! Hristina
